Today was a Field Trips with Sue morning on CBS Better Mornings Atlanta. We talked about lots of free activities coming up this weekend, as well as some fall favorites. If you didn’t see it, here’s what you missed.
Free Fun this Weekend…(Watch the segment on CBS Better Mornings Atlanta)
The Atlanta Ballet is hosting What Moves You, a free program on healthy living including dance classes, nutrition seminars and healthy snacks for children and adults.
The Yellow Daisy Festival at Stone Mountain Park: Fall Festival season is beginning. Today through Sunday is the Yellow Daisy Festival at Stone Mountain Park. The event is free, with $10 parking fee. This is consistently voted one of the top five arts and crafts shows in the nation. There is something for everyone, shopping, festival food, live music, a Children’s Corner even a Men’s Den to catch the big game.
- What Moves You Healthy Ballet: The Atlanta Ballet is celebrating healthy living this Sunday with What Moves You Day from 10 – 6pm at the Atlanta Ballet’s Michael C. Carlos Dance Centre in west Midtown. They’re offering kids and adults free dance classes. Everything from ballet, hip hop, yoga, salsa and more! There will be nutrition seminars and healthy snacks ideas. Best of all it’s totally Free!
- High Museum of Art Hot Glass: The Hot Glass Roadshow of The Corning Museum of Glass comes to the Woodruff Arts Center Stifly Plaza Sept. 12 – 16. Watch master glass blowers take gobs of molten glass and shape them into vases, bowls and sculptures. There is a “You Design It; We Make It!” session which should be pretty neat. The last demo on Friday 15th is at 7:45 pm, so it could be a fun date night.
Fall Favorites (Watch the segment on CBS Better Mornings Atlanta)
Picking apples each September has become a family tradition for us. We like to visit BJ Reece in Ellijay.
Apple Picking in Georgia: One of my families favorite fall activities is picking apples and September is when you want to head to Ellijay in north Georgia to pick. We generally go to BJ Reece Apple House but there are several. To find the right apple orchard experience for your family, see our post on Apple Picking in Georgia.
- A trip to North Georgia wouldn’t be complete for our family without a stop at Col. Poole’s BBQ in East Ellijay. In addition to some great BBQ and pork puns, you can get your name on the Pig Hill of Fame
- Corn Mazes: Fall means it’s time for Corn Mazes and my kids love getting lost in the maze. There are lots of them around Atlanta. Here is a list from 2011, keep watching Field Trips with Sue and we’ll update this list soon. Most corn mazes have other fall activities too like pumpkins, jumpees, hayrides and more, so check the individual websites for all they have to offer.
Also this week…
The King and I at the Fox Theatre
Rogers and Hammerstein’s The King and I is playing now through Sept. 11 at the Fox Theatre. I had the opportunity to see the show last night. The costumes are gorgeous and I found out afterwards that two of the children in the play go to school with my son. How awesome! I didn’t realize all the children in the show were local actors and actresses.
