Star Wars Weekends was just amateur hour. The Walt Disney Company announced this week they will be adding two new Star Wars themed lands in a galaxy not so far away, specifically, Walt Disney World in Orlando and Disneyland in California.
Disney to Add Two New Star Wars Lands to Theme Parks
The announcement of two new Star Wars lands at Walt Disney World Theme parks is BIG news in our household. One of my fondest memories of my boys is playing with toy lightsabers in our front yard. Our visit to Walt Disney World during Star Wars Weekends is still one of our favorite field trips. The older boys marched in the Star Wars parade, then battled Darth Vader and Darth Maul at the Jedi Training Academy. We took our lightsabers to be signed by Jedi Mickey. The then toddler refused to leave the mouse’s side, prompting Mickey’s handler to ask, “I don’t know that we’ve every had a child refuse to leave. Can he do that?” There wasn’t a big scene or yelling and screaming, just a cute little guy shaking his head ‘no’, not taking his eyes off Mickey, when asked if he was ready to leave. That same child grew up and had us riding Star Tours until we couldn’t take it anymore, and then made us go one more time.
Details on the New Star Wars Land
Details of the new lands was revealed this at D23, the ultimate Disney fan conference. During an Expo panel it was announced a pair of 14-acre lands featuring creatures, characters and vehicles pulled from Star Wars: The Force Awakens as well as the older films. A Mos Eisley-style cantina, as well as two signature attractions: one that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the Resistance and the First Order and the other that allows you pilot the most famous ship in the galaxy, the Millennium Falcon, was also announced. The lands will be located in both Disneyland in California and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. I’m super excited to see this at Hollywood Studios. This is my favorite Disney park, mostly because I was one of the original cast members that opened the park back in 1989. Also announced for Hollywood Studios is a Toy Story Land.
Growing Up Star Wars
My oldest walks in from school and says, “Mom, Star Wars Weekends was just amateur hour.” If that’s so, I can’t wait to see the professional show.
I couldn’t find any dates for breaking ground or completion for Star Wars Land. My guess is we are still several years out. Disney does have plans to bring some newer attractions based on the movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but nothing close to the scale of the Star Wars Lands.
In the meantime, my teens have already been discussing the awesomeness of the new Star Wars Battlefront video game coming out right around their birthdays. And of course there’s the movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens to see. We’ll have plenty of Star Wars to keep us busy for a little while.
